Back Rehab
This section includes exercises and stretches for the purpose of retraining the muscles and tissues of the thoracic and lumbopelvic spine. Additionally, this series of exercises for low back pain also includes hip rehab. Hip issues significantly influence muscle imbalance in the low back. Please use the Back Rehab list emailed to you to identify which exercises your are currently prescribed. Though the technique is primarily taught in the clinic, it is important to repeat at home. The videos are meant as a reminder on how to perform the maneuvers. You should not attempt these exercises unless under the direction or supervision of a Doctor or Therapist.
Back Rehab Range Of Motion
Range of motion exercises are aimed at providing symmetrical and pain-free range of motion. This set of exercises is to be performed before moving onto targeted stretching. Retraining the body is important to develop smooth controlled motion in joints before moving onto stretch or strength maneuvers.
Back ROM Exercises Level 1
Level one Range of motion exercises are the easiest and most gentle of the Back Rehab exercises. This is the best starting place. It’s good to spend one to two weeks on this set.
Back ROM Exercises Level 2
This is next in the range of motion series. Undoubtedly, you will notice some common themes in movement patterns. Level 1 was basic movements, but in level 2 we begin to add more complexity to the movements. Perform this set of rehab for one to two weeks.
Back ROM Exercises Level 3
In level 3 we continue to add more complexity to the movements which challenge the body’s motor patterns. This back rehab should be performed for about one to two weeks.
Back Rehab Stretches
The goal of targeted stretches is to lengthen muscles and further work into any muscular asymmetries. Before beginning these stretches, work through the range of motion exercises. This is crucial in order to ensure that painful joint mechanics do not prevent the body’s ability to fully stretch a muscle. If you feel pain then the muscle will contract against the action preventing the lengthening we are trying to achieve. Try warming up w/ a few cat-camels first.
Back Stretches Level 1
Level one stretches are comparatively the most gentle and basic stretches. These maneuvers are designed for the purpose of lengthening contracted muscles. Stretches should be done to tolerance. Try and relax through the motions. If you aren’t relaxing, you aren’t fully stretching the muscle fibers.
Back Stretches Level 2
Level 2 back stretches take you a little further into those tight muscles. Again, don’t push it. Go slow and try to relax into the stretches. Warm up with a few cat-camels, knee rocks, or other ROM exercises before stretching.
